Groundsman
The groundsman - known as the 'curator' in Australia - is the person with the responsibility
for preparing the pitch and
the
playing area for the match, with the assistance of the
groundstaff.
Control of the use and maintenance of the pitch and the playing area passes to the
umpires after the
toss has been made before play commences. From that point until
the end of the match it is the
umpires who will make the decisions on whether or not the pitch is fit for play or requires covering,
and so on. Good groundsmanship is a highly-skilled craft and good groundsmen are much prized by
their clubs.
