Twelfth man

The twelfth man is a fielder substituting for a member of the nominated team who is absent from the field for any legitimate reason. The twelfth man may field wherever his captain directs - other than as a wicket-keeper - but is not permitted to bat or bowl. Also see the entry for substitute.
